After licking my wounds at my base about m away , I came back and thoroughly searched the cave. The rifle was nowhere to be seen. What typically happens with items that are dropped? Do they de-spawn? And if so, how much time goes by? I dropped a rotten melon outside of my base once, and it saw it there for quite a while as I entered and exited my base.

Items don't seem to de-spawn. If they do it takes a long while. As long as you don't delete any cache files, everything stays where it is.

The answer should be never BUT the devs did a lot of optimization work right before launch, and the "duh" optimization issue is "garbage collection" or getting rid of unneeded stuff out in the world. I can tell you for a fact that dropped items did not despawn over my recent ish in-game days playthrough.
Beyond that, it's hard to say. They don't despawn. So somewhere out there is my stasis rifle I was inside the mouth of a vertical cave when I dropped it, so the only place it could have fallen was into the cave. And the cave's bottom isn't very big, so I've gone over it very carefully. Items have essentially no health, so they are destroyed by the slightest damage, though if set on fire they may remain for a few seconds before disappearing.
Nether stars are immune to explosions, and netherite -based items and tools are immune to fire and float on top of lava. Also, some blocks that normally damage mobs, such as magma blocks , campfires , sweet berry bushes and wither roses , do not damage items.
